Discover the Magic of the Butterfly Garden
Step into a world filled with color, movement, and life at our butterfly garden, a carefully designed environment where these delicate insects can thrive in surroundings that closely mirror their natural habitat.
At the heart of the garden stands an impressive geodesic dome, designed to make the most of its surroundings while providing ideal conditions for the plants and butterflies inside. With a height of 14 meters and a diameter of 24 meters, it is the largest structure of its kind in Costa Rica.
Inside, you will find a lush tropical garden featuring a waterfall fountain and two streams that flow into a small pond, its water naturally filtered by aquatic plants and continuously recycled as part of the garden’s ecosystem. Winding paths lead you through the dome, crossing four small bridges as colorful fish glide beneath you.
For a different perspective, climb up to the viewing platform and take in the garden from above. Surrounded by tropical plants and flowering bushes, you may find butterflies fluttering all around you. From up here, the dome also opens onto sweeping views of the volcano and the secondary forest of the Arenal Oasis nature reserve.
At the base of the platform stands a striking installation featuring the enormous wings of the Blue Morpho, one of the most iconic butterflies in Costa Rica.
The garden also makes for a beautiful backdrop for photography and special occasions — weddings, birthdays, private events, and photo shoots.
Another highlight of the experience is the puparium, where you can observe the incredible variety of shapes and colors found in butterfly chrysalises. Here you can witness one of the most captivating stages of a butterfly’s life, as it emerges from its chrysalis, dries its wings, and takes flight as a fully grown butterfly.
Beyond the dome, the experience continues through our outdoor gardens, home to a diverse collection of flowering plants, host plants, fruit trees, medicinal species, orchids, mushrooms, and Mariola hives — shelter to Costa Rica’s remarkable stingless bees.
The nursery is where the butterfly breeding process takes place, giving visitors a closer look at the complete life cycle of these delicate insects.
Butterflies are not only lovely to look at — they also play an important role as pollinators and serve as valuable indicators of environmental health. A visit to the garden is a chance to learn more about their captivating world while enjoying a unique experience surrounded by tropical nature.
Come and discover this colorful corner of Costa Rica — a place where nature, butterflies, and tropical beauty come together.

What Your Guided Tour Includes
Welcome & Introduction
Your experience begins with a warm welcome from your guide, who will introduce you to the butterfly garden and the world you are about to discover. Learn why butterflies are so important to the environment, their role as pollinators, and why protecting their habitats is essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems.
The Story Behind the Dome
Your guide will share the story of how this unique butterfly garden came to life, and how the dome itself has evolved over the years — the ideas, the effort, and the work behind creating an environment where butterflies and plants can thrive together.
You’ll also hear about how the garden has grown and adapted since it opened, and why butterflies play such an important role in Costa Rica’s natural environment.
The Butterfly Garden & Conservation
Here, your guide will walk you through the conservation efforts that make this habitat possible — from the plants that support butterflies at every stage of life to the daily practices that keep this carefully balanced ecosystem healthy and thriving.
Flora & Fauna
Explore the incredible variety of plants that make the garden possible, from the species that provide food and shelter for butterflies at every life stage to the other plants and animals that share this environment. Together, they form a complex ecosystem where every element has a role to play.
The Fascinating World of Fungi
Fungi are an often-overlooked but essential part of any healthy ecosystem. During the tour, you’ll see how they help break down organic material, enrich the soil, and support plant growth — and hear about the surprising relationships that exist between fungi, plants, and insects.
Behind the Scenes: The Laboratory
Step behind the scenes to see what happens before a butterfly ever takes flight. In the laboratory, your guide will walk you through the stages of butterfly breeding — from collecting eggs and caring for caterpillars to the formation of chrysalises — and explain why careful observation and research matter so much for conservation.
Inside the Butterfly Dome
The highlight of the experience is the visit to the magnificent geodesic dome, where butterflies fly freely among lush tropical vegetation. Take your time to observe these delicate creatures up close as they move through the garden, feed on flowers, and interact with their surroundings.
Surrounded by greenery and vibrant colors, this is an opportunity to experience the beauty of Costa Rica’s butterflies in an environment designed to support their natural behavior and well-being.
The Butterfly Life Cycle
Round out the tour with a closer look at the butterfly life cycle. Your guide will walk you through its four main stages — egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly — and how each one plays an essential role in the survival of the species.
Capture the Experience
At the end of your visit, take some time to capture your favorite moments with photos and videos. Your guide can also share tips for photographing butterflies while respecting their space and avoiding unnecessary disturbance to the animals and their environment.
